Word Tally

Count words, characters and reading time as you type, offline.

What it is

Word Tally is one page and one script. Paste text into it and it counts words, characters, characters without spaces, lines, sentences and the reading time at 225 words a minute. Everything happens in your browser: the file makes no network calls at all, keeps nothing, and needs no account. It is the tool you want when a form tells you your text is too long and will not say by how much. To use it, open index.html in any browser. To put it on a site, copy both files into the directory you serve. There is nothing to install and nothing to configure.

What the screen found

Read on 2026-10-08 — a model read it too: Word Tally is a harmless offline browser utility that reasonably matches its description and is suitable for approval.. A screen is not a guarantee: it catches what is never an accident, and the maker's own claims are the maker's.

What you get, and what you may do with it

cheese-shop-licence-1: a licence to use what you bought — personally or in your business, no time limit, and you may change it for your own use. You may not resell it or give it away. The maker keeps the copyright. Sold as it is, without warranty.

The terms, in full

You keep your work

Your intellectual property stays yours. What you built here is your copyright, and listing it here does not change that. What you give us is a non-exclusive licence to host, screen, list and deliver your item and to take payment for it — nothing more. No assignment. No exclusivity: you may sell it elsewhere, and you may withdraw it.

What every buyer gets is the same licence — one set of terms for everything sold here, not a different licence per item. That way a buyer knows what they are paying for before they look at anything else, and you know exactly what you are agreeing to before you submit. By submitting an item you agree to these terms, and every sale is made under them.

  • The buyer may use it — personally or in their own business, with no time limit.
  • The buyer may change it for their own use, and run it on their own machines.
  • The buyer may not resell it, give it away or publish it, and may not offer it to other people as a service. What they bought is theirs to use, not to pass on.
  • You keep the copyright. Nothing here transfers it, and nothing here stops you selling the same item somewhere else, or using it yourself however you like.
  • No warranty. An item is sold as it is. We screen what is listed — we do not guarantee it works, and neither do you promise that it will.

The one thing you must be sure of is that the item is yours to sell. If it carries somebody else's work — a library, a font, an icon set, a tool — their licence governs that part and may not allow what these terms promise a buyer. We look for licence files while screening and will ask you about anything that looks like it came from elsewhere.

What you are paid

60% to you, the maker, and 40% to us, out of every sale — fixed at the moment of that sale, so a later change to the split never changes what you have already earned.

Our share is not a toll; it is what we do between your work and a buyer:

  • Screening. Every submission is checked before it can be listed at all — that it was made here, that it is what it says it is, and that it is not malicious or unlawful.
  • Placement. The listing itself: its page, its category, its one-line description, so people find it.
  • The sale. The payment link, the payment, and the entitlement that says a buyer owns the right to download what they paid for.
  • Delivery. The download link, re-checked against the hash of what was screened.

You are paid once a month, by PayPal or Cash App, to the address you give us — the same arrangement as the rest of our partners.

What can be listed

Software you made here, and only here. An item is only listable if it was created on this platform and has never left it — that is what makes screening meaningful rather than decorative, and it is enforced by a fingerprint taken when the item was made, not by anything you type. There is no upload path for an artifact, by design.

One exception, and it is marked on the page wherever it appears: an example — something made elsewhere, posted by us, not for sale, with a link to its own source and a line saying we did not screen it. Nothing a maker can submit is ever listed that way, and an example can never be bought, downloaded or installed from here. It exists to show what this kind of work produces; the first one on this page is why the shop exists at all.

Services are not listed — no "I will do this for you" posts. That may become its own area later; it is not this one.

Every submission is reviewed automatically for safety, malicious intent and legality before it appears, and a person reads anything the screening flags.
